Enjoying the freedom of the run

If you enjoy the feeling of rubber meeting the road, the air burning your lungs and the freedom you feel while running then you have to join the family of road runners at the Krugersdorp Road Runners (KRR) club.
With an impressive 200 members, of which between 70 and 80 are active members, they are one of the clubs you have to consider if you are looking for a running club to join.
Unfortunately as Coronation Park has not yet opened after lockdown, and the KRR clubhouse is situated at Coronation Dam, they have not been able to return to their clubhouse.
Steven Anderson, the club’s chairman said this has not slowed them down at all, and even during the lockdown the club had taken many initiatives to ensure their members’ well-being, among them a virtual Comrades race that was well received and attended by club members.
But they did not only look after their members’ minds and bodies, they also established a food fund. Any member who was struggling financially during the lockdown was assisted with food and hygiene parcels.

The excess funds have also been earmarked for various charities in the Krugersdorp area.
When they returned at the start of the Level 1 lockdown, they started looking for places where their runners could do their time trials.
“We approached the Krugersdorp Golf Club and they agreed,” Steven said.
That is the reason you will see runners dressed in bright green running through the streets of Krugersdorp North every Thursday evening when they do their time trials.
There are two distances runner can choose from – a 4km run and a 8km run for those who are fitter. Steven said one does not have to be a Comrades runner to run with them, and many of their new members only started running during lockdown.
They get together at the Golf Club every Thursday evening, and start running from 5.45pm. On weekends they train.
Danie de Villiers, who has an impressive ten Comrades marathons under his belt, is helping to coach the runners.

For an extra run the KRR runners join the Khosa Road Runners for their time trials on Wednesdays, and the Khosa runners join them on Thursdays.
With Covid being what it is they have also established guidelines to ensure the runners’ safety. From Google registration, sanitizing stations, staggered starts and going digital the club has adopted a dynamic approach to their Covid protocol in order to adapt to new government regulations quickly.

Steven added they are truly a family-oriented running club and many parents bring their small children in strollers to ‘run’ with them. No matter what age or how fit you are, they want you to join them. They also would like to thank the Krugersdorp Golf Club management for generously accommodating them.
