Join the Vikings Boxing Club and show what you’re made of
If you have ever been interested in boxing and want to see if you have what it takes, why not join the Vikings at their new venue at Key West.
Have you ever dreamed of becoming the next world heavyweight boxing champion? Do names like Jacob Matlala, Corrie Sanders, Evander Holyfield or Lucia Rijker get you excited?
Why not see if you have what it takes by joining the Vikings Boxing Club.
Even if you do not dream of knocking out an opponent you can learn how to throw a punch, keep yourself disciplined and keep fit.
For many years the Viking Boxing Club has been part of the Witpoortjie community, teaching young boxers the technique and discipline to become champions in the boxing ring. Now they have decided to expand.
Vikings head coach Phillip du Randt explained that the facility where the club members usually train is currently used as a Covid-19 vaccination site and they needed to find a new space to train.
On Tuesday, September 7 they opened their new training facility at the Key West Shopping Centre’s action sport arena.
Phillip explained that initially this was only a temporary move but they soon realised that there was a need for another boxing club in the Krugersdorp area as well. When they are able to move back to the Witpoortjie facility they will keep the new club open as well.
They are known for their Olympic-style boxing but also want to start with functional boxing fitness classes soon.
“We want to give the ladies a place to learn the technique and we want to build the sport of boxing,” Phillip said.
There is a misconception that boxing is a violent sport and he said they wanted to change that. Krugersdorp is big and they are looking for new talent. They are inviting young girls in particular who have a passion for boxing to come and join them.
One of the young girls is the 16-year-old Jo-Lee van Tonder who has been boxing for four years. She will be joining 12-year-old Shane du Plooy in October when they compete in the Junior School Boy and Girl Gauteng championships.
Jo-Lee said what she enjoys most about the sport is the punching and the fitness, while Shane said he just loves everything about the sport.
The club trains from Mondays to Thursdays from 18:00 till 20:00, and anyone is welcome to join.
