Coming together through road runs
Run Zone West Rand teamed up with a number of other clubs to host their Bruce Fordyce 1 Hour Time Trial on September 12.
Birds and runners have something in common. Both get up very early in the morning – one to catch the worm and the other to get their running fix.
At 06:00 on Sunday morning, September 12 while most other people were still wrapped up in their blankets, about 210 runners lined the road outside Laerskool Kenmare’s main gate for the Run Zone West Rand (RZWR) organised club and individual runner event – the Bruce Fordyce 1 Hour Time Trial.

The runners started off with a relaxed warm-up round on the 1,6km circuit. Then they were off for the one-hour time trial. The goal was to see who could rack up the most kilometres within that time. Mario Mnguni triumphed in the end with a total distance of over 18km.

RZWR club manager Warren Mackenzie said, “We had clubs from all over, from Randfontein to Northcliff, coming to join while Run Zone’s top elite runners came from as far as Vosloorus. The reason for the event was to do something different, something fun but mostly to get to know our neighbouring clubs.

“In so doing Krugersdorp Road Runners, Vanessa Combrink and I are going to start an interclub time trial now. These things lead to bigger and brighter opportunities. Krugersdorp Road Runners were our biggest supporters and through that we’ve built an alliance which can only help both clubs in the future.”

I-Floors and Timber City sponsored the prize money of R3 200 and R12 000 respectively of the winners of the different divisions. “Timber City has officially become our main sponsor and will be sponsoring all our events as well as club runs, etcetera. The club can only benefit from such a huge sponsor like this,” Warren added.
