Jan de Klerk wins first match of netball league
After their win, the school hopes to dominate the D2 league.
Hoërskool Jan de Klerk hosted St Ursula’s High School for a thrilling first match of the Gauteng West D2 School league, which was played on Jan de Klerk’s netball court on Wednesday, April 22.
During the first quarter, Jan de Klerk’s U14 scored six goals as the away side created several scoring opportunities but did not succeed. Jan de Klerk’s goal scorer Kagiso Maimane did a good job of creating chances of scoring as well, giving her teammates a fighting spirit. At the halfway point, Jan de Klerk was in the lead.

The players appeared hungrier for more goals in the second quarter as St Ursula came back fighting, which granted them three goals, but Jan de Klerk fought harder to add six more goals to their score. Jan de Klerk did well in their possession and passing, maintaining the second quarter with a positive mindset. They won their first match of the league by 12 goals against St Ursula’s three.
Sharon Mokoena, St Ursula’s coach, mentioned how her team needs to work on their attack.
The only thing we are aiming to fix is the centre passes because that’s the only way to go forward.
“It was not a bad loss for our first match, even though we struggled in the middle, but my focus is on maturing my attackers, and I’m very happy with their effort they brought to the match,” said Mokoena.
The winning coach expressed how she felt with the U14’s first win of the league.
“I was excited to see my team play their best in their first match; they played extremely well, and I’ve noticed a few things that we are going to work on for the next league match,” said Ane Hendriks, Jan de Klerk’s coach.
Jan de Klerk’s players are motivated by the win against St Ursula, and are looking forward to the next game against Kingswood Academy on May 7.
