Mandela Day inspires healthy living in Magaliesburg

Magaliesburg Secondary School learners got moving this Mandela Day as Deputy Minister Peace Mabe and partners promoted fitness, fun and community through the #IChoose2beActive initiative.

To celebrate Mandela Day, the community and students of Magaliesburg Secondary School enjoyed a special visit from the Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, who came to support a Mandela sports initiative.

This event brought together various partners like Boxing South Africa and the South African Football Association.

Deputy Minister Bertha Peace Mabe explained that the day was filled with fun sports activities such as soccer, netball, aerobics, exhibitions and lively live music performances.

Netball players also show their skills.

It was all part of the ongoing #IChoose2beActive campaign, which runs all year round. This initiative encourages everyone to get involved in physical activities as a way to live healthier lives, as promoted by the department.

She said the #IChoose2beActive is more than just a hashtag; it’s a movement supported by social media and various organisations, inspiring people to prioritise their well-being through exercise.

“The main message is about choosing a healthy lifestyle and enjoying the benefits of staying active, both physically and mentally,” Mabe said.

Mabe said the department’s programmes aim to build a more active, creative and united nation.

“By nurturing these qualities, they hope to boost South Africa’s economy, foster social growth and strengthen our sense of community.”
