Rising rugby stars take centre stage at Monnas

The Golden Lions secured gold in the U16 boys and U18 girls categories at this year’s Interprovincial Youth Club Tournament held at Monnas.

The Interprovincial Youth Club Tournament (IPYCT) has been going strong for the last 20 years, and this year it was hosted in Krugersdorp.

Earlier in October, the IPYCT was hosted by the Golden Lions Rugby Union Youth Rugby (GLRUYR) at Hoërskool Monument High School.

GLRUYR chairperson Heather Dolley explained the tournament included teams such as the Lions, Valke, Duikers, Blue Bulls and Sharks, with U13 to U18 players competing.

“This is a club provincial tour. Each union holds trials with their youth clubs and then selects squads to represent their province in the tour,” she explained.

She further described the tournament as the club equivalent of the Craven Week, held after the rugby season during the school holidays.

General manager of the Golden Lions Rugby Union, Pieter Visser, explained that the tournament gives opportunities to players who do not play professionally, such as B and C rugby teams. This was also the second time women’s rugby was involved.

“We do this; otherwise, we can just copy and paste the Craven Week provincial teams,” he said.

The following teams won gold:

• U13 Blue Bulls
• U14 Blue Bulls
• U15 Sharks
• U16 Girls Sharks
• U16 Boys Lions
• U18 Girls Lions
• U18 Boys Bulls
