Hanri aims for victory
Rising star from Noordheuwel, Hanri Pretorius, heads to the UIPM World Championships determined to fly the West Rand flag high.
Hanri Pretorius, a matric learner at Hoërskool Noordheuwel, will soon fly the West Rand flag high as she heads to Mossel Bay from December 12 and 13 to compete in the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Championships after excelling in laser run.
She has already earned her junior Protea colours twice and is also an elite track and field and cross-country athlete. Her talent has secured her a full scholarship to Bradley University in Illinois, USA, for next year, where she will study Child Life Sciences.
Hanri first took part in a laser run league in December 2023. In July last year, she represented South Africa at the World Championships in China, where she finished fifth in her age category. She also placed third in the mixed relay and second overall with her U19 girls team.
She told the Krugersdorp News that she has always had a passion for sport and was inspired from a young age by her sisters.
“My interest in athletics started at a young age while watching my two sisters participate. I began running in primary school when I joined Franco Oosthuizen’s training group. In Grade Six, I earned a position on the provincial team. Under his guidance, I refined my skills, built my endurance and developed the discipline needed for competitive running. The training and mentorship I received shaped me into the athlete I am today,” Hanri said.
This year, she competed in five different South African Championships, including the Laser Run Championships, where she finished third, and the Cross Country Championships, where she placed ninth.
“I am passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of others, particularly children, and I believe this field of study will equip me with the knowledge and skills to do that,” she concluded.
