Watch: Autistic Noordheuwel boy races towards his Formula 1 dream
An eight-year-old Syringa Karting Track racer is building confidence and social skills on the track as his family shares his story to raise autism awareness.
An eight-year-old boy diagnosed with autism and apraxia is pursuing his motorsport dreams while building confidence and social skills through go-karting.
Hougaardt Janse van Rensburg was diagnosed with autism at two and formally diagnosed at four. He also has apraxia, a condition that can affect movement co-ordination and speech. He began go-karting in August last year, and his passion has since grown, with ambitions of reaching Formula 1 (F1) or Formula 2 (F2).
His father, Louis Janse van Rensburg, said joining the #1 Karting Academy has brought significant improvements in his son’s confidence, communication and social interaction.

Academy brings noticeable transformation
“When he first joined the academy, he was extremely reserved and communicated very little. Since then, he has grown tremendously in confidence, communication and social interaction,” Louis said.
Hougaardt has started making friends and is becoming more comfortable interacting with others. Racing has also helped him manage his anxiety by giving him something positive to focus on.
“When he gets into the kart, he is focused and happy. It gives him something that he loves and something he can work towards,” Louis said.
Hougaardt trains and competes at Syringa Karting Track and other venues, developing his concentration, racing skills and competitive instinct.
Family maps path forward in motorsport
His family has a development plan that includes continued training, the Sodi World Series Championship, and potentially progressing to the F400 Team, Rotax MAX Championship, and eventually single-seater racing.
Although reaching the highest levels of motorsport is not guaranteed, his parents, Louis and Annamarie, hope to give him every opportunity to pursue his ambitions. They also want his story to raise autism awareness and inspire other families.
“As parents, we want people to see Hougaardt for who he is – not only as an autistic child, but as a boy with dreams, passion and potential,” Louis said.
The family welcomes sponsorship and support to help Hougaardt develop his racing career.
“Different does not mean less. Sometimes, your difference can become your strength,” Louis concluded.
