One on one with Joey Rashdien

Joey makes evolution, biology and history funny.

Joey Rasdien’s absurd yet thought-provoking stand-up comedy show tackles the touchy subject of evolution and how natural selection has blessed many of the figures that loom over South African life.

Topics under scrutiny range from the devil and Charles Darwin to Julius Malema and Steven Hawking in a show that will make you laugh until tears are rolling down your face.

The NEWS sat down for a one on one interview with Joey to learn more about the thoughts and ideas behind the show titled Evolve.

About the show

How can biology be funny?

I read a tweet from a fan stating that he never knew that biology and history can be that funny. People should watch the show to see how funny these academic topics can be.

Did you excel in these subjects in school?

I loved the subjects in school and went on to study biology at university level.

You poke fun at Juluis Malema in the show, what are your views about him as a politician?

The show is all about how people , technology science and the world has evolved – Juju let’s just say his political strategies wouldn’t have been accepted years ago – a lot of jokes were born from that.

About Joey

You were a financial adviser at Old Mutual and gave your career up for comedy, why?

Comedy is what I love it gives me a sense of fulfillment that nothing else ever will .

And the money..?

I don’t do anything for money or financial reward; I do my job because I love it.

How do you feel about marketing yourself trough social media?

Woody Alan is the kind of man that inspires me when it comes to marketing through all this media stuff. The man does not even own a computer, this he won’t be able to be influenced by the opinions social media users have of him. He is oblivious. I would like to say that I follow his example as far as possible. I use the social media with caution.

A word of inspiration

After telling him all about all my problems a wise Indian man once asked what I am doing with my life, “I do what I love, I do comedy,” I said. He replied with one word … continue. When you are overwhelmed with life and all of its issues do not over analyse and complicate things, just … continue.

Joey Rasdien is also a talented actor with much acclaimed roles in Bunny Chow, Dollars and White Pipes and Material. His latest offering was Biltz Patrolie with David Kau and Kagiso Lesiga among others.

Popular in Big Line Up shows such as Mass Hysteria, Kings and Queens of comedy, come and see Rasdien speak at length about his peculiar subject matter with a dose of his sane insanity. It’s sure to be hysterical, educational and thought provoking.

Joey is the face of a new generation of South African comedy.

Don’t miss out on this hysterically-funny show at Silverstar Casino from 7 March, doors open at 7pm. This show is for 18 years and older only.
