What was trending in 2019?

Here are some of the top stories which nearly broke the internet in 2019.

Here’s to looking back at a busy year online. These were some of the top trending stories in South Africa and internationally.

1) Actor Keanu Reeves came on stage at E3 2019, to introduce the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 game. He became an instant meme and clips and photos of him saying “You’re breathtaking” to a fan from the stage were shared so much they nearly broke the internet.

2) Singer turned actress Lady Gaga had to defend herself against the internet after her too-convincing portrayal of love between herself and co-star Bradley Cooper in the film A Star is Born convinced the fans that the two had a romantic relationship in real life.

3) Full House and 90210 (2008) actress Lori Loughlin was involved in a scandal for allegedly bribing her daughter’s way into the prestigious University of Southern California. It was later claimed that she and her husband paid about $500 000 (roughly R7 500 000) to get their two daughters into the university.

4) Empire actor Jussie Smollett made an accusation that two men attacked him in the early morning hours after shouting homophobic and racial slurs at him, pouring an unknown chemical liquid over him and tying a rope around his neck. He was later indicted for disorderly conduct involving allegedly paying two Nigerian-American men to fake a hate crime assault on him and filing a false report with police.

5) Everything American President Donald Trump Tweeted seemed to go viral online. Some of his more interesting Tweets include:

*I am the only person who can fight for the safety of our troops & bring them home from the ridiculous & costly Endless Wars, and be scorned. Democrats always liked that position, until I took it. Democrats always liked Walls, until I built them. Do you see what’s happening here?

*“This President is the most patriotic President I’ve seen in many years. He is going to do what is good for Americans.” Congressman Brian Babin, Texas. Thank you Brian!

*The Do Nothing Democrats, Pelosi and Schumer stormed out of the Cabinet Room!

6) A rumor about the Friends sitcom, which ran from 1994 to 2004, spread like wild-fire across the internet. Fans’ hopes were high that a reunion episode with the six main characters was just around the corner. This was unfortunately later confirmed to only be a rumour.

7) A listeriosis (a food-borne infection) scare gripped South Africans again in 2019 and the flames were stoked by rumours spreading online. Two hundred people were reported to have died from this disease, which made many believe that there was an outbreak in South Africa. This turned out to be far less than the usual average, and the country was in no more danger of listeriosis than usual.

8) Load shedding, Rugby World Cup fixtures, Jacob Zuma, Meghan Markle, Kevin Anderson, Malusi Gigaba, Black Data, HHP, royal wedding, how to get pregnant, jobs near me, Dis-Chem near me and Nandos near me were some of the most searched for terms in South Africa in 2019.
