Young girl impaled by her bicycle’s handle airlifted to hospital
A young girl was impaled by her bike's handlebars while riding on an off-road mountain bike trail late on Thursday afternoon.
A 14-year-old girl was impaled by her bike handle after falling off her bike on an off-road mountain bike trail on Thursday evening, February 16.
Shaw Herbst from Netcare 911 said they responded to a fall in the Rangeview, Paardeplaats area at 17:47.
He added that reports indicated that a 14-year-old girl had sustained suspected spinal and head injuries after falling off her bike.
“On arrival of paramedics, they found the handlebar of the bike impaled in the girl’s right thigh, leaving her in a serious condition.”
She was treated on the scene while bystanders dismantled the bike. Due to the sensitive nature of her injuries, the Netcare 911 helicopter ambulance was activated to airlift her to a specialised trauma facility.
