Tzaneen hikers conquer Botswana’s sandy desert

The fearless Xpressions Hiking Team represented Tzaneen at the Botswana Annual Charity Desert Walk on Saturday July 28

The walk took part in Jwaneng, a town situated about 170km from Gaborone,the capital city of Botswana.

It was the first time for all 12 members of the local hiking team.

The walk was distiguished into two parts the 15km and 30km walk, in which nine members finished the 30km and three completed the 15km.

“My first impressions about the country is that it is a very calm country, we received a warm reception from everyone.

“The crime rate there is very low and the fuel price is so low, we paid about R10,70 for a litre of diesel,” explained Nyiko Masango, Leader of Xpressions Hiking Team.

Masango applauded the organisers of the walk in terms of the proffessionalism they showcased for the event.

“The walk was tough because were walked about 99% of the time in sand and it was abit hot, but we conquered.

“This walk is a preparation to the annual 100km walk from Polokwane to Tzaneen on August 31. Masango added.

He established the 100km walk in 2017, fighting for the rights of fathers to be present in their children’s lives.

This year theme is titled ‘Presence in Fatherhood’.

Anyone is welcome to take part in the walk, it will start in Polokwane from 22:00 on August 31 and end in Tzaneen the next day.
