EFF Tshwane mayor ‘coming soon’

This follows remarks by EFF leader Julius Malema during a press conference earlier last month that the party was looking to take over the metro mayoral office.

The EFF has again hinted that the Tshwane metro could soon have an EFF mayor, as talks of cooperation between it and the DA continued this week, Rekord East reports.

“In the very near future, we will be governing this city,” said party caucus leader MoAfrika Mabogwana during the budget debate on Thursday.

Mabogwana made the remarks addressing the Tshwane council in connection with the insourcing of cleaners.

Mabogwana said the EFF would insource cleaners when the party takes the highest office in the city.

“The whole of Tshwane will have to wait until EFF takes the reins – and it will be very soon.”

This follows remarks by EFF leader Julius Malema during a press conference earlier last month that the party was looking to take over the metro mayoral office.

He also said EFF councillors would also be appointed MMCs in the Johannesburg metro.“We have already started talking to the DA, we are sharing power in Johannesburg and we are sharing power in Tshwane.”

He said that they would not, however, call for a motion of confidence against the current mayor.

“We want to take over in a calm manner,” he said.

He added that the current mayor “ought to have known that he is just a caretaker in the metro until the elections passed”.

Malema did not specify who their candidate for mayor would be but said it would definitely be an EFF leader based in the metro.

DA national spokesperson Solly Malatsi confirmed to Rekord that talks were ongoing between the two parties with regards to metros in which the DA is leading coalition governments.

“The EFF had previously requested a meeting with the leadership of the party to discuss councils where the DA is … leading a coalition government.”

“We are still in discussions with the EFF and no outcome has been finalised yet.”

Responding to whether the DA has confidence in an EFF Tshwane mayor, he said: “it would be irresponsible to comment”.

Incumbent mayor Stevens Mokgalapa told Rekord he intends to remain mayor until 2021.

“I will continue doing my job in service of the people of Tshwane,” said Mokgalapa.
