George man dies as car goes over cliff at Voëlklip
Another life has been lost at the notorious cliff in the Western Cape.
A man died after his car went over a cliff on the Voëlklip Road near George yesterday. The body has been recovered.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, emergency services were dispatched to the scene at about 15:30 after a member of the public alerted authorities about the vehicle that went down a cliff.
“A search and rescue operation resulted in the retrieval of the body of a 50-year-old man from George,” he said.
The identity of the deceased is not available at this stage and investigation into this matter continues.
The notorious stretch of road is known to be a hot spot for tragic incidents.
In the past year three people died:
- Conrad Maree (33) plummeted to his death when his vehicle veered off a cliff from the gravel road leading to Voëlklip on February 8.
- Ren (81) and Leonie (77) van Dyck from Herold’s Bay were found with gunshot wounds to their heads on a bench at Voëlklip on April 3.
