Ba-Phalaborwa Muni denies landfill ‘unbearable stench’ claims

Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality pushes back at landfill stench claims, saying odours are not 'unbearable' and health risks are unverified.

PHALABORWA – Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality is actively implementing measures to improve operations at the landfill site.

This is according to a statement on the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Facebook page, where they denied the allegations in an article about the state of the dumping site in last week’s Herald.

“While the municipality acknowledges that landfill operations may at times produce odours, particularly under certain weather conditions, the characterisation of the situation as ‘unbearable’ is subjective and not reflective of consistent conditions on the ground,” they said.

“Furthermore, claims suggesting severe and immediate health risks to surrounding communities are not supported by verified environmental or public health assessments. The municipality continues to manage the site within regulated parameters and remains under oversight by relevant authorities,” they stated.

In last week’s Herald, the spokesperson, Jonas Mahesu, was contacted for comment, which was published.

The content of the Facebook statement was not shared with the Herald.
