Local chefs invited to Potjie Pride Showdown in Tzaneen

Local restaurants and chefs will compete in the Potjie Pride cook-off in Tzaneen, celebrating traditional cuisine and community spirit.

LIMPOPO – The Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce is inviting local chefs and eateries to take part in its annual potjiekos competition, which will be held during the Smit & Kie Family Fun Day at the Letaba Showgrounds on Friday, May 1.

Annual potjiekos competition returns

This year’s theme, Potjie Pride: The Restaurant Showdown, will see restaurants, pubs, and lodges from across Tzaneen competing for top honours in a celebration of traditional potjiekos and community spirit.

Confirmed participants include Krabbefontein and Red Oak Guest House, with more entries expected.

Cook-off venue and setup details

The cook-off will take place next to the Bosbok Bar at the Letaba Rugby Club, with ample parking available behind the two halls near the Vodacom Tower.

Teams will compete for bragging rights and the title of best potjie chefs in town.

Entry costs R500 per team and includes four tickets, which is the maximum number of participants allowed per team.

Each team will be allocated a 3x3m space and must supply their own cooking equipment, ingredients, utensils and gazebos.

Programme schedule for the day

The programme begins at 09:00 with team setup, cooking starts at 10:00, and judging takes place at 14:00.

Teams can earn bonus points for creative décor and coordinated outfits.

A table and three chairs must also be provided for the judges.

Professional standards expected

The chamber emphasises that this is a formal competition between established eateries, and a high standard of professionalism, hygiene and presentation is expected throughout.
