GLM’s reaction on water crisis
LOVERS Maenetje, Communications and Events Management Officer at the GLM responds to our front page article on the water crisis in Modjadjiskloof:
Politsi Water Purification is currently unable to keep up with the consumption demand. One of the contributing factors is new residential developments over the years like extensions in Ga-Kgapane and establishment of Mokgoba Township, these without the upgrading of the water source. Lepelle Northern Water has currently obtained approval for additional water quota from the Department of Water and Sanitation and are presently in the process of designs to upgrade the plant. The water restrictions have been planned with an endeavour to get the system to its normal working condition through raising-up levels of the reservoirs supplying Modjadjiskloof, Ga-Kgapane and surrounding farms. The joint teams from GLM and Lepelle Northern Water constantly carries our inspections of the leakages along the lines and over the past two weeks alone, we had to repair 20 bust pipes because of the aging infrastructure in Modjadjiskloof alone. We are currently busy fixing the three remaining leakages and water will be able to reach everyone. Residents are informed that the water notice that was issued recently has not been implemented thus far pending the leakages, as soon as the leakages are fixed, we are likely to implement the notice which will assist greatly in filling our reservoirs to the maximum and be able to provide sufficient water regularly.
The notice is not a permanent arrangement, as and when the level of water is high, implementation of the notice is likely to stop.
We as a municipality are working around the clock to fix all the bust pipes, we are busy negotiating with Mopani District Municipality to revamp the water infrastructure in Modjadjiskloof and Kgapane which will help in the water loss caused by all the leakages.
We greatly apologize for the inconvenience caused by all the leakages.
