PHALABORWA – Phalaborwa swimmers played a key role in Limpopo Swimming’s dominant performance at the annual Inter Provincial Gala, held at Stanford Lake College on August 22.

Several swimmers stood out, including Sophia Potgieter, who set five records, and Luhann Joubert, who set one. Lleyton Lira, Miane Bendeman, Gené Botha and Charmé van Niekerk also delivered strong performances.

Records tumble across individual and relay events

Limpopo won the overall team title after collecting 49 gold, 42 silver and 46 bronze medals in the 94 individual events, while setting 15 new records.

The province was equally dominant in the relay events, winning 21 of the 37 gold medals, with 13 of those victories also setting new records.

Potgieter was among the record-breaking swimmers and was further rewarded with the junior Victrix Ludorum title.

The province also claimed all three major team honours, being named winning boys and winning girls team, and overall winning team.

Sheila Grobbelaar said the results reflected the swimmers’ hard work and commitment, as well as the strength of Limpopo’s swimming programme.

“We are incredibly proud of the swimmers and what they achieved at the gala. The number of medals and records speaks for itself, but what makes us especially proud is seeing our swimmers supporting one another and contributing to the success of the team,” she said.

Dolphin Aquatics praises its Phalaborwa pair

Dolphin Aquatics congratulated its Phalaborwa swimmers, Gené  and Charmé, on their performances.

“Swimming is about more than just winning medals. It is about setting goals, working hard, building confidence and continually striving to improve. Gené and Charmé demonstrated all of these qualities throughout the competition,” the club said.

The club added that representing Limpopo at provincial level was a significant achievement and praised both swimmers for representing their club and province with pride.
