Tragedy strikes Comrades athlete

Happy Ubisi, employee at Mica Hardware in Phalaborwa, lost his wife in a head-on vehicle accident.

An oncoming minibus taxi’s tyre burst and collided with his vehicle near Manutsa Park on Thursday afternoon, en route to the Comrades Marathon.

Netitia Ubisi (26) died in the accident and Happy Ubisi, an athlete from Phalaborwa Road Runners was taken to a local hospital with injuries to his chest from the impact with the steering wheel and dashboard. 

By Friday morning he was yet to be examined and the extent of his internal injuries had not been established.

The couple got married in December last year and they have two children, a boy and a girl, who are currently in the care of their grandmother. 

The family will only start making arrangements for the funeral in the coming week.
