Gospel musician in court for killing a taxi driver

A gospel music artist on Friday appeared in the Naphuno Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Hendrick “Maphapole” Shai (35)’s appearance in court followed after he shot to death a taxi driver and seriously wounding two others at Lorraine village in Sekororo last Tuesday.

Shai, who is also a school teacher was remanded in police custody and his case was postponed to this Friday pending further investigations.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed the shooting incident and identified the deceased as a 24 year-old taxi driver, Maruping Malatjie from Lorraine village.

Ngoepe said the shooting ensued after a heated argument between Shai and members of the Letaba Taxi Association who are operating in Sekororo.

“At this stage it is not clear what the argument was about but police investigations into the shooting are continuing,” said Ngoepe.

He said Malatji died on the scene while his colleagues who were both shot in the arm and chest were admitted to hospital for treatment.
