Communities urged to use water sparingly

The Mopani District Municipality urges community members to utilise water sparingly as dam levels in the district dropped drastically due to shortages of rain.

According to the Mopani District Municipality spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana, out of the nine main dams supplying water to communities in the district, seven of them have dropped below 50%.

“It is estimated that six of these dams will be empty if it does not rain by April,” said Shikwambana.

Following are dam levels in the Mopani District Municipality area: Thapane Dam is 0% empty, Thabina (19,18%), Nsami (19,30%), Modjadji (19,95%), Middle Letaba (26,70%), Tzaneen (33,9%), Tours Dam (33,50%), Klaserie (54,40%), Blyde (57,7%), Ebenezer (72,1%) and Magoebaskloof which is 100,10%.

Shikwambana said working together with the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Mopani District Municipality will enforce the implementation of drought operating rules at all dams including water restrictions for both domestic and irrigation use.

Dams to be affected by water restrictions are Middle Letaba, Nsami, Modjadji and Tzaneen Dam.

“Due to these restrictions, the Mopani District Municipality is also implementing water supply partitioning in the affected communities,” Shikwambana.
