HOEDSPRUIT: Rescue Rhino @HESC launched

As a result of poaching and in efforts to save the rhino from extinction HESC launched Rescued Rhino @HESC.

Rhino poaching is one of the most significant issues currently facing South Africa and is showing no signs of decreasing.

The number of rhino poaching victims that reported to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) in the past few years is a clear indication of just how rife the vicious attack on this species is.

As a result of poaching and in efforts to save the rhino from extinction HESC launched Rescued Rhino @HESC.

“This programme aims to assist in the care, rehabilitation and reintroduction of orphaned and injured rhinos affected directly by poaching to the wild.

Rescued Rhinos @ HESC also continues to raise awareness of the plight of the species among the surrounding communities, the youth and the public at large”, said HESC’s Karen Swiegers.

The HESC who currently has eight young rhino orphans and four poaching survivors in their care, therefore saw it necessary to develop anti-poaching initiatives in order guard the rhinos at the centre as well as on the greater Kapama Game Reserve.

“At HESC we also established our own Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) which consists of a team of highly trained individuals as well as canines who have gone through a grueling Protrack Anti-Poaching course and the HESC calls upon individuals who can assist them and help the unit stay operational as it is very expensive to keep it functional and we can be contacted on 015 793 1633”, stated Karen.
