Tzaneeners tighten the belt as petrol price increases

Tzaneeners braced themselves as there was yet another increase in the price of fuel.

Tzaneeners can brace themselves for yet another increase in the price of fuel.

The Department of Energy last week announced a petrol hike, effective from midnight August 2. Petrol will go up 19 cents per litre, diesel 29 cents, while paraffin will increase 30 cents per litre.

According to the department, the recent depreciation by the rand against the US Dollar and oil price increases, are some of the major factors which have contributed to the hike.

This has a direct impact on consumer spending patterns and implies that households are left with less disposable income, in order to accommodate increased transport costs.

Motorists are urged to tighten their belts, as the rand remains unstable and more increases can be expected in the near future.

Some tips on how to cope with the petrol hike:

*Spending less on luxuries like eating out

*Avoiding accumulating more credit and settling your loans quickly

*One can also consider options like starting travel clubs with colleagues or cycling, as alternative means of travelling to work.
