SLC hosts ‘The Wik’ Triathlon

SLC hosted its sixth annual triathlon, ‘The Wik’ Off-Road Triathlon, in memory of late friend and staff member, Wik van der Walt recently.

What an awesome day it was – both the excellent weather and the competitive racing!

The event was well supported from the athletes and a lot of new comers came to participate.

It is a sign of just how popular this event is and also of the popularity of triathlon in Limpopo.

There were talented fields in both the long and the short course races.

The long course event consisted of a 1km swim, 26km MTB, 10km run whilst the shorter event included a 500m swim, 15km MTB and 5km run.

Plenty of names were thrown around as potential winners of both races.

The mountain did not disappoint and the weather, combined with plenty of hills at altitude, made for some tough racing conditions.

However, the athletes had prepared well with hard training and put in great performances.

In the short race – “The Wik” it was Tzaneen local, Kuno Venter winning the men’s category with Ian Jannasch in second and David Rodgers third.

Stanford pupil, Lia Revelas (Grade 10), won the ladies race with another Stanford pupil, Ani Gutierrez-Hernandez, in second and Ashleigh van Niekerk in third place.

Lia Revelas also won “The Wik” trophy for being the first Stanford pupil to finish the race.

It was also the first time that a girl won this trophy!

In the longer race, the Stanfordian Challenge, Walt Katzke, won the men’s with Chris Dando in second and Joel Alves in third.

Britt Dando won the Women’s category with Gina Cloete in second and Christelle van der Merwe in third.

The kiddies race was also a huge success and it just shows that is fun for the whole family!

Well done to all athletes who took part and a big thank you to the sponsors, Nashua Limpopo, Paintpot, PPS and Dust Suppression Technologies.

SLC look forward to seeing you all again in 2019!
