Ribbon cutting ceremony marks official opening of astro

The Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce held its monthly luncheon meeting at High School Ben Vorster on Friday, October 19 as part of the official opening of the new Astro hockey pitch.

The guests were treated to a variety of iced cocktails on arrival from where they entered a marquee tent erected next to the hockey pitch, which had beautifully laid tables, filled with wine and an array of delectable food prepared by The Junction, Letsitele.

The Headmaster of Ben Vorster, Chris Denysschen, in his opening speech said that this is a dream come true and thanked the Komati Group for this wonderful initiative which will take Ben Vorster to another level.

Piet Smit, Chairman of the Komati Group, said that “ability is nothing without opportunity” and this facility will provide the opportunity to develop future hockey stars.

Christiaan Smit, Head Boy 2019; Eddie Vorster, Chairman of the Governing Body; Piet Smit, CEO of the Komato Group; Chris Denysschen, Principal and Milanè Smit, Head Girl 2019.

Llandi van der Walt, Chairperson of the Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce, introduced the first guest speaker of the day, Danie du Toit from Digi TV, who already has a business relationship with High School Ben Vorster when they became the first school in the Limpopo Province to launch their own television station in August, called ‘Vossie TV’. Du Toit committed to free live streaming of all hockey games played by the Vossies and free subscription for the parents.

The second guest speaker, ex-Protea hockey player Alister Fredericks, who is also the first national player of colour, has vast experience in the development of Astro based hockey. He gave invaluable information and advice and emphasised the importance of having the correct staff complement, in particular, professional coaches.

“The development of local players must take preference and must commence at junior level,” Fredericks told all present.

He will try to get the national team to play games at Ben Vorster.

The pitch was then officially opened by the cutting of the ribbon by Smit after which the festivities continued. The next chamber meeting is scheduled for November 23 and will be sponsored by Trans Letaba Panelbeaters and Smit & Kie.
