TZANEEN: ‘No gangs in our schools’

With the recent escalation of gangsterism and violence in the South African schools, local educators are holding hands together against school crimes.

The Thabina Circuit hosted a School’s Safety and Security Meeting at the Lenyenye Community Hall recently.

The aim of the meeting was for the Department of Education and different stakeholders to share ideas on how to combat the trend from mounting out of control.

“As the department we are worried about the violence that is happening in the precinct of our schools.

“There are a number of organised gangs that have been identified in our schools such as ‘Ama 100’ and ‘Dangerous Family’ famously known as DF,” explained Tom Kgomo, Thabina Circuit Manager.

Many of the gangs normally go to schools and ambush learners and also disrespect teachers and as a result the educators feel unsafe at work.

Kgomo urged parents to stop covering up for their children and to report any criminal activities to the police.

“If you hide and protect them, the problem will perpetuate,” he added.

In the meeting it was also agreed that the department will organise a march protesting against school violence in the near future.

Some of the stakeholders who honoured the occasion included: the SAPS, Greater Tzaneen Municipality, traditional authorities, Professional Educators Union and Congress of the South African Students.

Kgomo also added that they callout to the whole community including businesses to work together in eradicating the social evil.
