Woman dies after flash flood in Wolkberg Wilderness area

A young woman tragically passed away when she was surprised by a flash flood during recent rains in the remote Wolkberg Wilderness area.

A young woman tragically passed away when she was surprised by a flash flood on Wednesday January 2 in the remote Wolkberg Wilderness area.
β€œThe woman was swept away by the water which rose rapidly and her body was found later more than a kilometre away,” Louis Menge from the Limpopo Off Road Rescue Unit said.
Raising the alarm in the remote and rugged terrain proved to be a significant challenge as there was no cellphone reception, according to Menge.
One of the men in the party hiked for more than 10 Km and drove a fair distance before being able to make a call for assistance.
The body of the woman was recovered on Thursday January 3 by a team comprising of Gauteng MSAR, Off Road Rescue Units from Gauteng and Tzaneen as well as SAPS Search and Rescue.
