Giyani: Boy (6) drowns after falling in trench left open by construction company

His body was found by his father and community members yesterday.

A six-year-old boy, Nsuku Mhlongo, from Homu 14B fell into a trench while playing with his friends.

His body was found by his father and community members late yesterday afternoon, Saturday January 12.

According to reports the trench was left open by a construction company two years ago.

The company was allegedly contracted to lay pipes in and around the Giyani area by Lepelle Northern Water, Witness Tiva, media spokesperson of the Mopani District Municiaplity (MDM) told Letaba Herald.

Tiva issued the following statement:

“As the Mopani District Municipality we would like to take this opportunity and pass our deepest message of condolence to the Mhlongo family after their child fell into a trench allegedly left by a contractor in the Giyani area at the weekend. As the Mopani District Municipality we will be engaging the Department of Water and Sanitation and Lepelle Northern Water to see to it that all trenches that have been left open by the contractor are properly covered and secured to avoid the recurrence of the incident, as the project in question belongs to the national department of Water and Sanitation. We are continuing to keep the family in our thoughts prayers during this trying time.”
