Tzaneen hikers conquer Lesotho mountains

Tzaneen's Xpressions Adventure Club, showcased its durability at the 2019 Moshoeshoe Annual Walk in Lesotho recently.

According to the native citizens, the walk commemorates the legacy of King of Basotho, the man who fearlessly brought together people of different tribes to form one peaceful nation of Basotho.

Moreover, the primary objective of the walk was to re-kindle the spirit of unity amongst Basotho as it is embodied in the legacy left by its founder Moshoeshoe.

The walk is a total of 116km in three days, where the participants move from one camp to the next daily until they reach the finish line at Thaba Bosieu.

Hundreds of people from the Southern African region had joined in on the event, people from South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

The local club is formed of walkers and hikers around Limpopo and Gauteng, who normally hike once a month. They have hiked in the Drakensburg, Magaliesberg, Magoebaskloof, Wolkberg and Serala to name but a few.

“The walk was a fun, hectic and thrilling experience, however for one to survive the walk they have to have the right shoes, because we were climbing mountains and crossing rivers,” explained Nyiko Masango, Founder of Xpressions Adventure Club.

As experienced as he is with long distance walks, on the second day he did not finish the walk because his feet could not take him further, but on the last day he managed to finish.

Lesotho’s Queen Masenate was one of the people who participated in the journey and she managed to complete the 116KM, beating her husband, King Letsie who only joined on the last day.

Masango has been hiking for over 15 years and he is also known for his Annual100km ‘Fathers Walk’ from Polokwane to Tzaneen.

Though the local adventure enthusiast faced some obstacles along the way, he said he is ready for next year’s event.

“Hiking is about pushing boundaries, it tests how far a person can be able to push.

It shows how tough one is, if you conquer a tough terrain it shows that you are tougher than it,”Masango explained, when asked why he loves hiking so much.

He concluded by saying that the Club is already preparing for their next walk; the Botswana Annual Charity Desert Walk coming up in July and he is inviting more people to join his hiking team.
