Liversage sentenced – unfit to possess firearm

Professional Hunters Association of South Africa member, Samuel Liversage, (69) was sentenced on March 26 at the Lenyenye Magistrate court.

The Herald previously reported that Liversage was arrested on August 17 in 2017.

Some 10 rhino horns, two large elephant tusks, 11 hunting rifles, of which four were unlicensed, over 1300 rounds of live ammunition and over 150 empty cartridges were seized by the Police. All 11 rifles, including the licensed weapons, were confiscated and sent for ballistic testing, Brigadier Vish Naidoo confirmed.

According to Sergeant Libhuwani Malaudzi Liversage was sentences as follows:

First count: Possession of unlicensed Firearm. Count 2: Possession of Ammunition. Count 3 was for contravention of, or failure to comply with section 57(1) read with section 1,6,56,57(2)101 and 102 of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004 which restricts activities involving listed, threatened or protected species.

On Count 1 and Count 2: For the purpose of sentencing Count 1 and Count 2 are taken together and the accused is sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, of which imprisonment is wholly suspended for a period of 5 years on condition that the accused is not convicted of any offense in contravention of the Firearms Control Act, committed during the period of suspension.

Count 3: The accused was sentenced R100 000 fine or 5 years imprisonment.

The accused was working as a manager at one of the farms in Hoedspruit when he committed the crime.

According to Malaudzi, Liversage was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
