Nyiko conquers Mount Kilimanjaro
Tzaneen's very own adventure enthusiast, Nyiko Masango made history when he set a new South African record after he climbed the highest mountain in Africa in 12 hours recently.

He concluded his climbing journey at Gilman’s Point at an altitude of 5685m above sea level.
Gilmans is only just 200m away from Uhuru which is the highest point in mount Kilimanjaro, at this height a distance of 200m is a big gap.
Masango says climbing the mountain in a day and without acclimatisation was a big risk, because he did a five day hike route in half a day.
He says that his success was a combination of fitness and will power.

“Will power is key, however fitness played a huge role in the climb, because I had never been on an altitude higher than 3000m before,” he told Mopani Herald.
He arrived back to South Africa on Tuesday morning at the OR Tambo Airport, where friends and family were waiting for him.

The climbing journey began over a month ago when he cycled from Tzaneen to Tanzania on the Presence to Fatherhood campaign which advocates for the rights of fathers in their children’ lives.
“The project was to help uplift humanity and motivate people who want to maximise their potential.
“A lot of people are living far below their potential and possibilities,” he added.
