Phalaborwa: Students get tips about ‘life in college’
“There are people who are roaming around the campus and you will think they are students, but be careful as some of them are not even students and are there for one purpose only, and that is to rob you of your belongings.”
After all the prayers, headaches from never-ending queues, and sleepless nights, students who wished to be enrolled at the Mopani College can now breathe a sigh of relief.
This is after the Mopani South East TVET College held their orientation for the first entering students on Wednesday, 22 January, at Sir Val Duncan’s Multi-Purpose Hall.
The orientation was in line with educating new students about ‘college life’, safety, and other activities taking place within the Student Support Services (SSS).
The event was well attended by various stakeholders such as the college management, South African Police Service, NSFAS, and Phelang Community Centre.

The college’s deputy principal, Stanley Motubatse, welcomed new students and thanked them for choosing Mopani South East TVET College as their preferred institution to further their studies.
“This is an institution of excellence and choice. You will get all the training and support you need for your personal development. You are also going to leave this college as a new person, but only if you listen to your lecturers and respect your classmates,” said Motubatse.
Motubatse advised students to stay away from ‘blessers’ and ‘sugar mamas’.
“People will come and tempt you with money and by doing that they will be robbing you of your future,” emphasised Motubatse.
Addressing the students, Sergeant Lebogang Selepe of Namakgale SAPS, made students aware of the criminal activities happening in and around the campus.
Sergeant Selepe encouraged students to stay away from shopping outlets if they do not have money to spend. He said shoplifting is the most common crime among students.

Also speaking during the event, the college principal, Levy Baloyi, welcomed the first entering students at the campus and promised them all necessary support to ensure success inside and outside of the classroom.
“From the moment a new student joins our college, we want them to feel a sense of happiness and belonging, as this is essential to their future success. Our facilities and dedicated staff will enable us to deliver our programmes in an environment that is intimate, friendly, and attuned to every specific educational need. Let us know, as the management, in case you need something and we will assist,” said Baloyi.
The principal concluded by urging students who registered while they did not appear on the list of successful applicants, to come forward and report whether college officials were part of this fraud and corruption.
