Justice for Dr Basil Khoza as his killers gets life imprisonment

Almost five years after Dr Basil Khoza's gruesome death, his killers are finally sentenced to life imprisonment.

The High Court in Polokwane on Wednesday, 19 May found Madala Rodney Nene guilty of Khoza’s death.

Khoza, who was 63 at the time of his death, was killed in Phalaborwa CBD on Thursday, August 25 2016 at about 23:00.

According to Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, police spokesperson, two men hit the doctor with a hard object on the back of his head as he was walking back from an ATM.

“He collapsed and died at the scene.

The accused robbed him of cash and a wallet with his bank cards.

“His body was found lying in a pool of blood,” Mojapelo said.

The duo worked tirelessly and meticulously.

They followed up on any information received until the two accused, Lazarus Mhlongo and Madala Rodney Nene (33) were apprehended.

The court found Nene guilty of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and 20 years for robbery.

His co-accused died of natural causes before the conclusion of the case against him.

The provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lt Genl Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the sentence.

“These heavy sentences that were handed down against the accused should send a clear message that crime does not pay.

“We commend our detectives for their meticulous investigations that ensured that the suspects were arrested, prosecuted and sentenced,” Hadebe said.
