Pensioner helplessly watches house go up in flames

The house has been totally destroyed by the flames, leaving no furniture or anything behind.

Granny Jeaneth Mathebula, helplessly watched her house disappear in flames recently at Mandela Zone E in Namakgale. The house has been totally destroyed by the flames, leaving no furniture or anything behind. Mathebula (68), her grandchildren and her last born son are now left without a home. According to her son, Thabiso Mathebula, the fire started at about 15:00 while the family was watching television

“We don’t know what may have caused the fire, as it started behind a wardrobe which is far from any electric plugs. “After noticing the fire, everyone started calling the neighbours for help. “People tried to assist in extinguishing the fire to the best of their abilities, but the fire was so fast and had already expanded to the whole house. “By the time firefighters arrived, the house was completely gutted,” he explained.

He also added that on the day of the incident, they did not have water in the area and can’t help wonder if the situation could have been different if water was available. Ward 7 councillor, Alinah Peta, told the Herald that she was called to attend to the family and when she got there she found Granny Mathebula in a dire and confused state. “We are appealing to anyone including businesses, to assist this family, as all their belongings have gone up in flames. “You can donate anything which will assist them to rebuild their lives, such as clothing, food and school uniforms for the children. “As the community leadership, we are also trying our best to assist the family where we can,” said Peta.
