Nyiko and friends hike at the Highest Pub in Africa

Adventure enthusiast, Nyiko Masango and a group of friends hiked to Lesotho via Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal recently.

The three-day expedition started at the South African border post in the Sani Pass to their first stop, the Highest Pub in Africa.

The pub is located on the eastern border crossing between South Africa and Lesotho, with an elevation of 2,874 meters at the top of Sani Pass.

They stayed at a base backpackers’ house for one night and then hiked to Thabana Ntlenyana, which is the highest point in Lesotho and the highest mountain peak in Southern Africa.

Masango told the Herald that backpacking is a lifestyle that is slowly growing in the community, as many people are showing interest in this pasttime.

“I have also started a group of backpackers in Tzaneen where we explore nature, trails and the outdoor life in general.

“I have had people on these excursions going through a difficult time, some grieving, but they leave the a hike feeling better all together.

“This is why I keep on doing this, it has helped me too in the past when I were going through a difficult period,” he explained.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, October 2, Masango and a group of friends walked 50km from Polokwane to Steven’s Lumber Mill.

The walk was in preparation for the 100km walk which will take place from Friday, October 15 to Saturday October, 16 from Polokwane to Tzaneen.

The upcoming walk is in support of ‘Presence into Fatherhood’ which aims to encourage men to actively be involve in their children’s lives.
