Vacancy: Senior Packhouse Manager

The purpose of the role is to manage the packing facility and related quality and protocol measures, operational teams and processes to meet packhouse requirements in a safe and efficient manner including human resources and customer services.

Job purpose:
To manage the packing facility and related quality and protocol measures, operational teams and processes to meet Packhouse requirements in a safe and efficient manner including human resources and customer services. Suitable candidates will need to have the following minimum qualification and relevant experience:

Qualifications and Experience
• National Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or Business Development or related • 5 – 10 years of experience in a Senior Packhouse Manager role or similar within the food, beverages or manufacturing facility • Relevant marketing and farming experience in Citrus agriculture will be an advantage. • Excellent knowledge of BRC, HACCP, and Global Gap Accreditation • Production management experience is essential • Excellent written and verbal communication skill

Key Accountability Areas Operations
• Drive the implementation of the business unit strategy to ensure overall success of the business
• Excellent mechanical aptitude of packhouse equipment and maintenance requirements
• Setting and maintaining correct sorting and packing targets and standards to maximise net farming income
• Design and implement Packing Programmes
• Maintenance Management
• Development and improvement of systems ensuring the creation and implementation of a strategy designed to grow the business
• Optimal utilisation of all resources, capacity and costs
• Design and implement more efficient procedures and processes
• Project Planning (3-5-year forecast / Capex)
• Plan, assign and direct work to team members
• Monitoring and analysing volumes and throughput vs capacity
• Verifying stocks and investigating delays
• Managing the volumes of fruit.
• Computing the quantities, qualities and types of materials required by production programmes.
• Monitoring and evaluating service delivery of suppliers
• Directing, supervising and evaluating the work activities of professional clerical, service, maintenance, and other personnel
• Align the business unit strategy with the organisational strategy, goals and objectives.

Financial Management
• Manage budgets and cost drivers (e.g. labour, packing material, chemicals, Overtime, Tipping Cost etc)
• Ensure finance policy & procedures are complied with in operational packhouse
• Review monthly operational costs compared to plan, introduce measures if parameters are exceeded
• Controlling expenditure and ensuring the efficient use of resources Controlling chemical stock and overseeing the mixture thereof.

Monitoring and Measuring Performance and Quality
• Understand all performance and quality measurements
• Assist in the establishment of performance management system
• Measure Production (Productivity) and review packhouse performance on daily, monthly and annual basis yearly sales performance of branches to ensure long term business goals and objectives are met
• Overall service delivery and quality management
• Oversee daily operations of the business unit
• Responsible for maintaining good quality according to packing standards
• Monitor correct packaging material, correct PLU, fruit quality packed, packing patterns used and carton weights.

Human Resources/ Industrial Relations
• Managing staff and maintaining high levels of discipline
• Perform supervisory responsibilities complying with organizations policies and applicable laws
• Conducting and facilitating necessary disciplinary processes
• Identifying and assisting in training requirements of packhouse personnel
• Performance Management – measure and review performance with individuals and teams against set objectives quarterly and annually
• Overseeing the selection, training and performance of staff
• Manage staff members by rewarding and disciplining staff members, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
• Fostering a healthy Teamwork environment

Customer Service and Communication
• Be able to liaise with all suppliers and maintain correct working capital levels for all consumables and packaging materials
• Meet all handling and packing protocols.
• Be able to implement and maintain Good Manufacturing Practices for Food Safety, including HACCP, GLOBALGAP
• Maintain and implement Health and Safety standards
• Understand and manage packhouse information and tracking systems Skills and Competencies
