Mopani district records most accidents over Easter

The Mopani District Municipality has recorded the most accidents in the Limpopo province over the Easter Weekend.

This was officially announced by the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya last week.
Mopani reported 20 crashes, followed by Capricorn with 13, Waterberg with 12, Vhembe and Sekhukhunee each recorded five.
The statistics show a decline from last year, she reported.
In 2022, only 20 road fatalities were recorded from 55 serious accidents, declining by 14 deaths from 34 fatalities accumulated from 61 serious accidents in 2021.

The most fatalities were reported in Vembe district. They accounted for seven deaths, a reduction of five as compared to last year.
Meanwhile Capricorn has seen an increase from four fatalities to five this season.
Waterberg has a decline of deaths from five to four, while Mopani recorded an increase from two to three.
Lerule-Ramakhanya, commended Sekhukhune for the huge reduction, from nine in 2021 to one death this year.
She stated that the killing of pedestrians was mainly by speeding vehicles.

However, Vhembe is the only district that recorded the deaths of pedestrians during the weekend.
“I want to commend our road users in all the other districts for heeding to our call for visibility and extra caution when crossing the roads.
“The rainy weather has also assisted because we had fewer people walking on the side of the road.
“We have also noted that of the common causes of the fatal accidents reported, 22 were as a result of speed that led to drivers losing control of their vehicles and overturning.

“Due to the high visibility of our officers on the roads, we recorded minimal accidents caused by reckless drivers.
“The use of alcohol is another underlying factor to the numbers that we continue to report on a daily basis,” she explained.
