D3840 under repair
Motorists using the D3840 Giyani-Phalaborwa road are advised to rather use the road through Makhuva village and connect to the main road at the Mbawula crossing.
This is because the road will be closed for construction as from March 6. Motorists from Phalaborwa have to turn left onto a gravel road that goes to Makhuva village once they reach the Mbawula crossing. They have to drive straight until they exit the village via the main road that connects to the tar road again. The easiest way from Phalaborwa is to drive straight to Makhuva village and then look for the road that goes to Giyani.

Motorists would be automatically connected to the main road. The same applies to the motorists coming from Giyani, they have to drive straight to Makhuva village and then look for the road that connects to the Phalaborwa road. This notice was posted by Daniel Mamphego, the social consultant for project T977A which is currently working on a 10km stretch of road D3840 that goes to Phalaborwa from Giyani.
According to him, the road is expected to be closed for one month, however, he indicated it might last longer. “Even the engineers are not sure when construction will be completed. But the plan is to close the road for one month only. Work is supposed to be completed by May 10.”
