Camp turns young rugby players into stars

Nkowankowa Rugby hosted a festive camp for junior players (u/11 and u/18) at Hudson Ntsanwisi School in Nkowankowa.

The camp for both girls and boys started on Monday, December 4, and will end on Tuesday, January 9. The participants were trained by the founder of the club, Bryan Mashigo, with seven other coaches, Artwell Makhubele, Nhlahla Khosa, Don Mlondobodzi, Akani Bvuma, Thando Shipalana, Luthendo Netshiodzwi and Oswin Shiridzi, The players received skills training, including catching and passing; contact with persons and groups; evasive running; kicking; attack, and other skills.

 

 

Training time.

The players were fortunate to have former Limpopo Blue Bulls women’s coach and former World Rugby educator, Kobus Redelinghuys, train them on attack and defence. “The camp was a success, as we had players that were on different levels, newbies and the more experienced ones. Having eight coaches makes the work easy. In only two weeks, we already saw progress in the players,” explained Mashigo.

The training sessions were two hours a day from 08:00 to 10:00. They trained two days consecutively and took a break on the third day. Players from outside Tzaneen were also part of the camp. The club recently held its year-end and awards function in Lenyenye where players were awarded. A number of the club players are representing Limpopo in school rugby. The club also boasts with Delsy Mkhari, a Springbok 7s player for the women’s team.

Emelda Tintswalo Shipalana
