Ramodike believes that every home should have a garden for food security

A pensioner and a former school principal, George Ramodike from Mokgolobotho village, keeps himself busy during retirement producing maize in his home garden.

He sells it to locals as a way of putting food on the table. He also grows bananas, litchis, paw-paws, mangos, and spinach, which he sells to fruit and vegetable vendors. “I encourage all retirees and senior citizens to take up farming as a way of keeping fit and making an extra income.” During the Covid-19 lockdown, he donated cabbage seedlings to schools in the Maake area to help supplement the school feeding schemes.

The schools also sold their crop to villagers as a way to raise funds. Ramodike says he believes that producing vegetables alleviates poverty. “More people should plant veggie gardens and schools should encourage lessons in agriculture to ensure food security,” he concludes.
