Tzaneen students fly Limpopo flag high at engineering fair

Two Letaba TVET College students flew the Limpopo flag high at the World Skills South Africa National Competition.

Automobile technology student, Sathekge Lesetja, and plumbing and heating student, Bridget Mailula, competed in the national engineering competition at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre held in Durban. Lesetja represented Limpopo in automobile technology and scooped third place in automobile technology skills.

Mailula, who participated as a female in the male-dominated plumbing field of study, was eliminated in the first round. The 21-year-old Mailula from Relela village outside Tzaneen said growing up in a village has not stopped her from following her dreams. After winning the bronze medal, Lesetja said he is returning to class to improve his skills even further.

“I am so proud of myself, I want to thank my family for supporting me, and the college acting principal, Moshoma Benjamin, who is our father at the college.” He said the college had invested in them and he did not want to disappoint them. The acting principal said the institution would stop at nothing to support students who want to showcase their skills.

“Both of them are provincial heroes, they represented Limpopo in a scarce skills competition. “We believe that Bridget’s success will motivate other female students to also participate and show that plumbing is not only for males,” said Moshoma. The college spokesperson, Godfrey Mabasa, said the institution celebrates the achievements of the students.

“This is the first time the college achieves a bronze medal in this competition, it is worth celebrating.” He said they will take what they have learned at the competition and implement it and hopefully do better next year.
