Benny flourishes as a painting and sketch artist

Self-taught artist, Benny Mboweni, is making a name for himself with his portraits.

He makes a living by doing drawings of ordinary people and celebrities. He came into the spotlight recently when he handed a portrait to Big Brother South Africa contestant, Yolanda Munyai, during her homecoming event in Namakgale. The 26-year-old from Makhushane village has been drawing since the age of 9. He loved to draw cars and houses as a young boy.

“In 2013 in Gr 7, I entered a drawing competition organised by Cashbuild in Namakgale. “I was competing against primary school learners in all of Phalaborwa and I obtained first place. “I won a trophy, a certificate, drawing materials, and R12 000 for my school.” He told the Herald that he is inspired by American painter, John Currin, who is one the most successful artists in the world.
