Magoebaskloof brewery funds Cape Parrot conservation
Zwakala raises R25 000 for Cape Parrot conservation with every litre of Cape Parrot Ale sold, supporting habitat restoration efforts.
LIMPOPO – Zwakala, a buzzing local craft beer brewery in Magoebaskloof raised money to fund research done by the Cape Parrot Project.
Zwakala, who is well-known for their award-winning Limpopo Lager crafted a Cape Parrot Ale last year pledging R10 for every litre sold of the refreshing pale green ale to the Cape Parrot Project.
Last week the brewery proudly donated R25 000 to the organisation that aims to conserve the endangered and endemic Cape Parrot through conservation research, habitat restoration and community involvement.
Rob Tooley of Zwakala Brewery says that the Cape Parrot Ale is his drink of choice. “Each sip contributes to conserving one of South Africa’s most endangered species, the Cape Parrot.”
He adds that the contribution of Cape Parrot Ale drinkers added to restoring and protecting local Afromontane indigenous forests by managing alien vegetation to assist natural forest regeneration and to supplement planting with indigenous species where appropriate.
There are fewer than 2 000 Cape Parrots left in the wild. “These vibrant birds are facing a critical threat to their survival. As South Africa’s only endemic parrot species, their plight demands urgent attention and action. We are grateful for the support Zwakala gives us with every batch of Cape Parrot Ale that is brewed,” says Daryl van der Merwe, Limpopo field officer for the Cape Parrot Project.
Van der Merwe invites readers to visit the Cape Parrot Project stall at the Blueberry Festival on February 2. “We will be there to sell some of our Cape Parrot Project merchandise and to create awareness,” says Van der Merwe.
