Phalaborwa soldier from DRC mission laid to rest
Phalaborwa honours LCpl Matome Malesa, who died in the DRC peacekeeping mission, with a dignified farewell attended by officials and family.
LIMPOPO – A sombre cloud hung over the Malesa home on Saturday, February 22, as family, friends, and dignitaries gathered to bid a final farewell to LCpl Matome Justice Malesa.
The fallen soldier, who gave his life in service of his country, was laid to rest at Mosemaneng Cemetery in Mashishimale. His sacrifice, alongside thirteen fellow soldiers who perished during a peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), serves as a stark reminder of the price of duty and patriotism.
Malesa, a dedicated member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) for two decades, was stationed at 7 SAI Battalion in Phalaborwa.
He tragically lost his life in a battle with rebel forces in Goma. His remains were repatriated on February 12 and officially handed over to his grieving family during a solemn memorial service at the Air Force Base Swartkop in Pretoria on February 13.
The funeral service was a dignified affair, marked by the presence of high-ranking officials and military personnel. Among those in attendance were Safety and Security MEC Violet Mathye, Mopani Executive Mayor Pule Shayi, Ba-Phalaborwa Mayor Merriam Malatji, Chief Whip Cllr Didodo Rapatsa, and Speaker Oliver Mabunda, alongside numerous exco members and ward councillors.
As the SANDF marched in honour of their fallen comrade, Maj Gen Godfrey Thulare delivered a tribute.
“Soldiering is a unique profession. It is a calling and a sacrifice where we give our country the ultimate gift, our lives. We would like to thank the Malesa family for allowing their brother, son, father, and husband to serve this nation with unwavering pride and dedication,” he said.
Malesa’s family expressed their profound grief and love for the soldier who was more than just a serviceman to them. His brother, Walter Malesa, struggled to hold back tears as he spoke.
“Our brother is no more. I am heartbroken beyond words. We shared so much, and now there is an emptiness that can never be filled,” he said.
Lesego Malesa, his eldest daughter, paid a touching tribute to her father.
“Today we gather here with heavy hearts to say goodbye to a man of honour, courage, and love. He was not just my father, but my mother’s husband, a soldier, a protector, and a man dedicated to his country and family. My father taught me the true meaning of strength, not just the strength to fight battles, but the strength to be kind, to stand for what is right, and to love without limits,” she said.
“While his uniform symbolised his duties, his heart symbolised his love for us. Though he is no longer with us physically, his lessons, values, and love will remain in our hearts forever. Instead of mourning his departure, let us celebrate the life he lived, the sacrifices he made, and the love he shared. His spirit lives on in every moment. Rest in peace, Dad. You will always be our hero,” said Lesego.
Mathye assured the bereaved family that Malesa’s sacrifice would never be forgotten. “He served his country with honour and distinction. His commitment to peace and security in the region is a testament to his character. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues,” she stated.
Malesa leaves behind his loving wife and three children, Lesego, Lesedi, and Lethabo Malesa.
