5th Amashova finish for Phalaborwa cyclist Welcome Khoza

Phalaborwa cyclist Welcome Khoza says flood damage to local roads cost him valuable training time ahead of the 40th Amashova Durban Classic.

PHALABORWA – Local avid cyclist Welcome Khoza was among the participants in the 40th Amashova Durban Classic over the weekend in KwaZulu-Natal.

It was Khoza’s fifth time riding the Amashova, and while he enjoyed the race, he was not able to match his pace from last year, when he finished in 03:55:00. This year, he crossed the line in 04:05:00.

Beautiful route, tough build-up

“It is always a nice experience for me, riding down from Pietermaritzburg to Durban; it’s beautiful scenery,” Khoza said. “However, this year I wasn’t able to train properly, because our roads are still in bad shape from the flood damage.”

The 106km race is one of the country’s most popular cycling events, drawing thousands of participants from across South Africa each year.

Eyes already on Joburg

Khoza’s next big race will be the Ride Joburg 94.7 in November, where he is hoping to have fun and connect with fellow cyclists.
