DA slams R500k vehicle for Tzaneen chief whip

The DA has criticised Greater Tzaneen Municipality's decision to buy a R500k vehicle for Given Malatji, calling it wasteful and unlawful.

TZANEEN- The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) has slammed the council’s decision to purchase a R500 000 luxury vehicle for chief whip Given Malatji, calling it a wasteful expenditure.

The DA was the only party to oppose the motion, which was approved on February 26 and also included the creation of a driver’s position for Malatji.

According to DA caucus leader René Pohl, the purchase violates government-imposed cost containment regulations, as outlined in the Municipal Finance Management Act and GTM’s own cost containment policy.

“The municipality’s policy, aligned with Treasury regulations, clearly states that only the mayor is entitled to an official vehicle. No provision is made for any other political office bearer,” said Pohl.

She further said that hiring a driver adds an unnecessary financial burden to the municipality, diverting resources from critical service delivery needs.

“This decision blatantly contradicts national cost-cutting regulations and undermines the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline. Public money should be used responsibly to benefit residents, not for unnecessary luxuries,” Pohl added.

As a result, the DA intends to report the matter to Treasury MEC Kgabo Mohoai.

In response, GTM spokesperson Vutivi Makhubele defended the decision, stating that the vehicle is intended to assist the chief whip in fulfilling his duties.

“We have informed the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) about the decision and will await their guidance before proceeding with the purchase. “The vehicle will remain municipal property,” Makhubele said.

At the time of publication, Coghsta had yet to respond to the matter.
