Hoedspruit stars in new Cruise film
Hoedspruit buzzes with excitement as Mission: Impossible 8, partly filmed in the region, nears its Cannes premiere and global release.
LIMPOPO – Excitement is mounting in Hoedspruit as residents await the global premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth and final instalment of the action-packed film series starring Tom Cruise, which was partially filmed in the region.
Directed and co-written by Christopher McQuarrie, the film is set to debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 14, ahead of its worldwide theatrical release on May 23. The highly anticipated release has faced multiple delays, most recently due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Originally slated for August 2022, the release date was postponed several times before landing on its current schedule.
Tom Cruise arrived in Hoedspruit in February 2022 to shoot key scenes, drawing significant attention and local excitement. While it remains to be seen which parts of the area will appear in the final cut, local leaders are eager to see how Hoedspruit and the surrounding Blyde Canyon are featured.
Tom Vorster of the Maruleng Tourism Association expressed hope that the film will spotlight the region’s natural beauty.
“We’ll have to wait for the premiere to see what scenes make it in,” said Vorster. “It’s a film that will be seen around the world. Hopefully, we can highlight the featured Hoedspruit and Blyde Canyon landscapes for visitors and locals alike.”
Matthew Diederichs, chairperson of the Hoedspruit Chamber/Sakekamer, said the global exposure could boost the local economy, particularly the tourism sector.
“This is the finest form of advertisement Hoedspruit could receive,” he said. “It shows again how Hoedspruit rivals destinations like Cape Town. From a business and tourism standpoint, it’s a golden opportunity. However, the potential for increased tourism may deepen existing challenges for locals, many of whom already struggle with the rising cost of living in the area.”
Resident Janine Scorer echoed the community’s excitement, recalling the buzz generated during Cruise’s stay.
“Tom Cruise caused quite a stir when he was here,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed the other films in the series and will be keeping a keen eye out for our beautiful scenery in this one.”
