48 000 HIV patients untraceable in Mopani
Mathutha L Malatji Hospital CEO reveals 48 000 HIV patients in Mopani are untraceable, urging community support during Aids memorial.
LIMPOPO – “Our urgent goal is to locate these individuals by the end of this year,” said Dr Sello Rasello, CEO of Mathutha L Malatji Hospital, as he revealed that 48 000 people living with HIV in the Mopani District are currently untraceable.
The 48 000 represents 5% of the Close the Gap campaign that was launched by the Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, in February this year, to identify and support the 1.1 million people who are living with HIV across South Africa but are not on treatment.
Rasello made this powerful plea during the annual Aids Candlelight Memorial held at Humulani Try Again Sports Ground on Thursday, May 8.
His remarks underscored the urgency of re-engaging those who have dropped out of treatment and the collective responsibility of communities in ending the HIV/aids pandemic.
Themed “Don’t Forget to Remember,” the moving event brought together health officials, community leaders, and residents to honour those who have lost their lives to HIV/aids and to stand in solidarity with those still fighting the battle.
Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor Merriam Malatji delivered a heartfelt message of hope, urging those living with HIV to adhere strictly to their antiretroviral treatment (ART) to live a long and healthy life.
Malatji also took the opportunity to address the pressing issue of gender-based violence (GBV), which she described as a “crisis within our communities.”
She called on residents to cultivate a culture of peace and compassion, emphasising that the fight against HIV/Aids must go hand in hand with the fight against all forms of violence.
She added that the municipality remains committed to providing access to essential healthcare services and supporting affected individuals through continuous engagement and outreach.
