Initiation elders appear before court in Mopani

Four initiation elders face charges after allegedly damaging property and stealing cash over loud music complaints.

TZANEEN – Four initiation elders from Ga-Phooko village in the Sekgosese policing area appeared in court this week on charges of malicious damage to property and theft of cash.

The accused are Phooko Moyahabo Edwin (42), Ramare Mpho Godfrey (36), Selowa Kabelo (28) and Makhumisane Thabang (30).

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the charges stem from an incident that occurred on the afternoon of June 24, when the suspects left the initiation school and went to a female resident’s home after receiving reports that she was playing loud music.

According to their cultural practices, during initiation school periods, community members are prohibited from playing loud music. Upon arrival at the property, the elders allegedly entered without permission and proceeded into the house where the music was playing.

Mashaba said that during the incident, they allegedly damaged various household items, including a DVD player, a plasma television, WiFi equipment, chairs and a microwave.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has called on all community leaders and elders to ensure that cultural practices are conducted within the bounds of the law and that disputes are resolved through proper channels.

“No one is supposed to take the law into his or her own hands, even with the slightest provocation. The are avenues for members of the community to follow, including reporting the matter to law enforcement authorities or traditional leadership in their respective areas,” said Hadebe.
