Phalaborwa teen stuns with double Foskor F21 finish

13-year-old Travis Mokgalabone wowed crowds by completing both the 5km and 21km races at the Foskor F21 Marathon.

PHALABORWA – A 13-year-old boy from Mashishimale, Travis Lesedi Mokgalabone, captured hearts and turned heads on Saturday, July 26, when he completed both the 5km and the 21km races at the prestigious Foskor F21 Marathon, held in partnership with Athletics South Africa.

While most participants trained for months to complete just one race, the vibrant teen ran both on the same day, showing courage and an extraordinary love for sport.

“I started with the 5km, but I was not satisfied. I felt like I still needed to run,” said Mokgalabone. “I love sports. When I am at home, I always keep myself busy with physical activities. I wanted to challenge myself with the 21km, and I thought I might even win. However, it was tough, but I pushed through because I love running. It makes me feel alive, and I am happy I finished both races,” he added.

Mokgalabone, who developed his love for athletics through school sports and is also passionate about soccer, stated that running helps him stay focused and disciplined.

His mother, Maida Nkwamba, watched with a mix of joy and disbelief as her son completed the race.

“I was so happy when I saw him finishing the 21km. I could not believe it. When I saw an ambulance coming, I panicked and thought maybe he had collapsed, especially because he had never done that distance before. But when he appeared at the finish line, strong and smiling, I was overwhelmed with pride,” she said.

What amazed his mother even more was the fact that Mokgalabone never even practiced for the marathon.

“He did not do any formal training for the 21km, yet he finished it. That is how strong and gifted he is,” said Nkwamba.

She also highlighted that her son is not only talented in sports but is doing very well academically. “He balances both education and sports. As a mother, that is all I could ever ask for.
We are so proud of him as a family,” she shared.
